A few years ago, by accident, I got into geocaching. I loved the movement of it and the hunt aspect. What I surprisingly found out was I really liked being outside and hiking.
Recently I picked up a book I’ve had for a few months called “60 Hikes within 60 Miles/Richmond.” It’s part of a series of 60 Hikes within 60 Miles books by Menasha Ridge Press. You can find the same book for all kinds of cities across America. I decided that this would be my next challenge for 2011; to do all 60 hikes within the next year. It could be hard or it could be easy. Some of the hikes are really short; like the 0.9 miles hike in Crump Park but some are rather long like the 20 miles hike around the Rivanna Trail in Charlottesville.
I don’t know that I’m going to hike every foot of every trail in each of the venues, but I plan to hike the main trail at least (too bad the Rivanna one IS the main trail – all 20 miles). At some of the places I might be doing some geocaching or mountain biking. I’m not that great of a mountain biker so whatever I do in that case will be relatively mild.
Some of the trails are urban like the James River Trails in Richmond and some are way off the beaten path like the Scheier Nature Trail in Fluvanna. My intention is to take a few pictures and write a few words about each hike. I don’t know that it will be all that interesting but it should be fun for me at least.
